History
The Safe LOW Power Kritical Experiment (SLOWPOKE) nuclear reactor in the Department of Chemical Engineering was one of six reactors in Canada. The U. of T. reactor installed in 1971 was replaced in 1976. It was dismantled in 1999. The SLOWPOKE was built primarily to provide neutron activation analysis, a process that identifies and measures trace quantities of many elements such as mercury and arsenic in everything from hair and bones to industrial waste. At U. of T. it has been used as a research and teaching tool by faculty and graduate and undergraduate students in various departments.
