Strategic Communications and Marketing is the current name of the UofT office responsible for managing the University’s brand and developing and disseminating strategic messaging that supports the University’s dual mission of world-class research and teaching. - from http://universityrelations.utoronto.ca/sc/
The office was started in 1920 as part of the University of Toronto's Department of University Extension and Publicity. In 1947, the department split to form the Department of University Extension, and the Department of Publicity. In 1958, the department was renamed the Department of Information, and again renamed in 1971 to the University News Bureau. In 1974 the name was changed to the Department of Information Services, and in 1984 the Department of Communications. In the 1990s, the department was renamed the Department of Public Affairs, and in the 2000s, became Strategic Communications and Marketing.
