        History

        Asoka Weerasinghe was born in Sri Lanka in 1936. He took schooling in Sri Lanka before moving to England to study at the University of London and the University of Swansea in Wales. In 1968, he relocated to Canada, completing a Master of Science in Paleontology at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, after which he worked as a geologist, paleontologist and museologist.

        As a poet, Asoka studied at the Poetry Society of London under Katherine Valmai Richardson. His award-winning poetry has been published internationally. In Ottawa, he co-founded the Gloucester Spoken Art poetry and storytelling series, with this and other contributions to arts and culture earning him the City of Ottawa Distinguished Civic Award in 2003.
