Scope and content
Alphabetical file contents include correspondence relating to requests for feedback on research and publishing, thesis advisory work, formal requests for letters of reference or evaluations, arrangements for participants in Operator Theory Seminars, and publishing correspondence for The Mathematical Intelligencer. In part, the material documents Davis’ significant personal and professional interest and support for mathematics students and colleagues from all over the world.
Files appear to have been maintained in active use by Davis, with collected offprints and other records relating to the file subject added over the years in chronological order (with or without correspondence). These provided an ongoing reference for the academic work and careers of the mathematical community of the time. While most of the correspondence in the alphabetical files pertains to mathematics, some files also contain material relating to human rights and other issues (when feasible this has been added to the file title by the archivist). See Series 5: Activism and Advocacy for further records relating to Davis’ activist work.
