File consists of a bound volume of typed and photocopied bibliographies compiled by Nouwen for use by his students in two courses.
There are eleven lists of readings and bibliographies in this bound volume. They include bibliographies on spirituality, Western mysticism, Ignatian spirituality, prayer, hesychasm, Russian spirituality, and Eastern spiritual theology. Some of the bibliographies were compiled by Nouwen's teaching assistant Joseph Nunez. This bound version appears to be Nouwen's personal volume as it contains minor annotations by him.

Spiritual Direction (course code 812a) was offered during the fall semester of 1980 as a seminar and was held at the Mercy Center in Madison, Connecticut. Meetings were held 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The class was limited to 13 students. Nouwen emphasized the importance of commitment and community amongst the members of this seminar. Students were required to have a spiritual director and were asked to submit regular reflection papers and a critical evaluation of the course at the end of the year. The required reading for this course included Kenneth Leech's "Soul Friend" and Thomas Merton's " Spiritual Direction and Meditation". The teaching assistant for this course was Mich Zeman.
