      History

According to legend, the four surnames of Tan/Tam 談, Tan/Tam/Hum/Hom 譚, Xu/Hoi/Hui/Hoy許, Xie/Jai/Tse/Che/Der 謝 shared the same ancestor Jiang Ziya 姜子牙, who assisted King Wu of Zhou 周武王 in destroying the Shang Dynasty and was then granted the title of Qi. The joint clan organization of the four surnames was established in San Francisco in 1896 under the name of the San Francisco Chew Lun Benevolent Association 金山昭倫公所. Regional chapters of Chew Lun Benevolent Associations were first established in North America and later spread to Asia, with the majority in Southeast Asia.

The first Canadian chapter, the Vancouver Chau Luen Kon Sol Society was founded in 1943, and the fifth surname Ruan/Yuen/Ngen阮 was added to the existing four. The Vancouver Chau Luen Kon Sol Society built a 13-storey Chau Luen Building at 325 Keefer Street, Vancouver, BC V6A 1H9, which was officially opened in 1971. The Chau Luen Kon Sol Society in Toronto was initially formed by five 譚 families and was located on York Street. It was later expanded and officially renamed as Chau Luen Kon Sol Society of Ontario 安省昭倫公所 and later moved to 71 D'Arcy Street, Toronto, ON M5T 1J9 until the present day.
