Scope and content

Item is a notebook with Joseph Churchill Arlidge's script for a concert. Annotations to the notebook suggest that he may have performed this program more than once; for example, on page 17, the original script reads "...this city..." but it has been altered twice to "town" and "village." Another annotation (page 29) indicates that his flute solo performance of "Du, Du, liegst mir am Herzen" will be accompanied by "my friend Mr. Atkinson" in one iteration, "Miss (Norville) Reid" in another, and "J.T. Muir of the R.A.M." in a third performance. One of the performances was to the A.Y.P.A. [Anglican Young People's Association], according to an introduction inserted at the beginning of the notebook.

The program covered various topics, which serve as titles throughout the script: The Philosophy of Life; The power of music, Singing in Italian, Old English Ballads; German music; Nomads and their peculiarities; Home, its associations and reminiscences; Childhood; Public men, and their relations with the public; Antiquity of the flute, modern improvements; Words on music; and Marriage.

Joseph Churchill Arlidge's program included the following pieces:

  • A Psalm of life / text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, music by Charles Coote [song]
  • Come lasses and lads / traditional British [song]
  • Du, Du, liegst mir am Herzen / traditional German [flute solo]
  • The Vagabond / Ralph Vaughan Williams [song]
  • Pianoforte solo on airs from the opera of Le Barbier de Seville, as performed by Mr. Muir
  • My old wife [song]
  • The naughty little boy / Richard Coote [song]
  • Reminiscences of childhood / J.C. Arlidge [song]
  • Never mind the rest / Henry Fase [song]
  • The Keel Row / Richard Carte [flute solo]
  • The Village Blacksmith / text by Longfellow, music by Willoughby Hunter Weiss [song]
  • Little Mr. Binks / H. Walker, as sung by George Buckland [song].
