Friends of the Library was formed in late 1991, after deliberation dating from 1983; members joined in early 1992, and an inaugural reception was held in March of that year. Its purposes included the promotion and furthering of the interests of the Library among the Alumni and general public; encouraging gifts and donations of books, manuscripts and funds; and increasing the resources and facilities of the Library through exhibits, programs, lectures, receptions, publications and other means of promoting the interests of the Library; one of the most successful activities was an annual book sale that began in 1992.
