Born in Winnetka, Illinois on February 17, 1917, she attended the North Shore Country Day School, Bennington College, Northwestern and the University of Chicago. She married David Gallagher in 1940; they moved to Albuquerque eight years later. In the fifties, she also worked on a newspaper in Aspen, Colorado; as an administrator for the New Mexico Welfare Department; and for Senator Joseph Chavez. Until her death, Julie Gallagher remained well-informed and conversant on world affairs. Gallagher died on January 17, 2006 at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
