Series consists of more than 16 000 letters received by Henri Nouwen between 1964 and 1997. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Nouwen as enclosures. In some instances, a copy of Nouwen's typed letter of reply is also included in the file.

Highly sensitive material (as defined in policy statement) will be restricted for 75 years from date of writing

List of correspondents in the Incoming Correspondence series will be made public.
Individuals who have letters in the Nouwen Archives have the right to place restrictions on their letters for a maximum of 75 years.
Letter are mostly in English and Dutch with some French, Italian, German and Cyrillic script.
Any intention to publish a letter in whole or part must be approved by the writer. Seeking permissions is the responsibility of the researcher.
Access to restricted material will be granted on a case by case basis. An access request must be made in writing and will be reviewed by the Archivist and the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust. An Access Restrictions waiver form will be signed acknowledging that the applicant will not disclose any personal information relating to any person, the disclosure of which constitutes an unwarranted invasion of privacy.
Access restrictions will be reviewed at the end of the restriction period.
Unless the Archives recieves notice from an estate, in the event of death of the letter author, the letters will be open to all researchers.
In the event that an access request is denied by the Archivist and the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust, researchers can request permission from the authors whose letters are restricted. The Archives requires a written letter of permission.
Being open implies records can be consulted only. No reproductions permitted except with permission.
