        President Georges Pompidou invited Pierre Boulez to establish the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris in 1970, with a mandate as a centre for research into new music and related technologies. The centre became operational in 1977 with Boulez as director, followed by Laurent Bayle in 1992.
