Note
Pastoral Care and Counseling was offered by Nouwen during the fall semester on Mondays from September 18 to December 11, 1972 at Yale Divinity School. At that time, Nouwen was an Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology. Nouwen continued with this course in his efforts to teach Divinity students practical psychological techniques, such as case-recording and clinical theory, that they could integrate into their jobs as pastoral counselors. Nouwen drew strongly on the work of Charles Menninger and Seward Hiltner for this course. The course also had guest speakers such as Colin Williams and Doug Morrison, films and field trips, but was more lecture-centric than past Pastoral Care courses. This is one of the first courses where Nouwen had his students divide up into small groups to discuss the course material. His lectures for this course also cover his preoccupation with clowns and the works of Rembrandt van Rijn. An assistant to Nouwen in this course may have been Bill McSwiggin.
