      Note

Christian Spirituality was a seminar offered by Nouwen during the spring semester of 1975 along with a similar seminar on Thomas Merton. This course had developed out of Nouwen's own monastic experiences and he hoped to explore ways of integrating the main aspects of Christian spirituality into modern society, rather than offering a straightforward historical approach to Christian spirituality. The discussions focused on the relationship between prayer and the common life, and prayer and study. Although monasticism was the focus of this course, Nouwen hoped to use the monastic world as a catalyst to raise and respond to questions about modern spirituality that were not typically monastic.
