Scope and content

Series consists of music composed or arranged for "The Group," later named "Nimmons 'N' Nine," a tentet jazz ensemble (clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, accordion, guitar, bass, and drums) led by Phil Nimmons. Most of the charts are written by Phil Nimmons, with a few contributions from other members of the ensemble. Nimmons later arranged some of the accordion parts for piano.

Nimmons formed "The Group" in 1953 and they performed regularly on CBC radio. They made their concert debut in 1956 at the Summer Festival in Stratford. In 1965, the ensemble expanded to "Nimmons 'N' Nine Plus Six" (see Series D).

Over the years, members included Jerry Toth, Bernie Piltch, alto saxophones; Roy Smith, Rick Wilkins, tenor saxophone; Eddie Karam, Jack Taylor, baritone saxophones; Erich Traugott, trumpet; Ross Culley, Butch Watanabe, Teddy Roderman, trombones; Vic Centro, accordion; Ed Bickert, guitar; Murray Lauder, bass; Ron Rully, Archie Alleyne, and Jack McQuade, drums.
