Scope and content

Series includes the photocopied papers and newspaper clippings of Miguel de Unamuno, copied by Maria Elena and Mario Valdés in the 1960s. Access to this material had been restricted in Spain under Franco’s dictatorship, requiring the help of the author's family to smuggle the copies out of the country. While one set of the material had been donated to the Fisher Rare Book Library, it is believed that this set of photocopies was what was personally retained by the couple. The originals are now held at the Universidad de Salamanca. Researchers interested in the custodial history of Unamuno’s archival collection, should also consult B2023-0007/006(20): Memo for file of the Department of Hispanic Studies, UofT, re: donation of Unamuno Collection in Salamanca, which discusses the possible sale of the material to UofT.
