Scope and content

File consists of a bound volume of reading notes on hesychasm created during Nouwen's seven month retreat at the Abbey of the Genesee (Piffard, NY). This is volume I of II. These notes would form the basis for Nouwen's full-year seminar, Hesychasm, during the 1979-1980 school year at Yale Divinity School. Some of the works covered are Lev Gillet's "La Prière de Jésus", Irenee Hausherr's "Hesychasme et Prière" and "Les Grands Courants de la Spiritualité Orientale", F.X. Murphy's "Hesychasm" from the New Catholic Encyclopedia, I.H. Dalmais' "Yoga et pratiques monastiques de l'Orient chretien",and Abraham J. Heschel's "A Passion for Truth". Nouwen's reading notes also include excerpts from the writings of Père Monchanin, Dorothée de Gaza, St. John Climacus, Thomas Merton, Simone Weil, Evagrius of Pontus, Diadoque de Photicé, and St. Bernard de Clairvaux. There are also nine pages of handwritten notes by Nouwen labeled "The Memory of Christ".
