Scope and content
Article written while Zuckerkandl lived in Vienna on the dispute about whether Bruckner's symphonies should be performed as their edited versions, or as the originals. Zuckerkandl argues that the decision should be based not on spurious bases of authenticity, but on the quality of the music itself. Using the 9th Symphony as an example, he argues that the edits were made to simplify the works and make them more accessible, but the originals, while more difficult, are more musically rewarding. Minor edits made to phrasing; Zuckerkandl's Vienna address and telephone number are handwritten at the top of the first page.
