Scope and content
Written just before the U.S. entered WWII. Zuckerkandl writes that American soldiers lack the mental preparedness to win the war because they have no clear justification for killing. They are told to fight to defend Christianity, though the Bible advocates non-violent conflict, leaving the average soldier at a loss for motivation. Addresses the need for Christian ideas to adapt to the modern era, and lays out the reasons that pacifism has failed - namely, that it failed to provide an option for non-violent conflict other than simply talking it out. Minor edits in pencil, correcting typos and phrasing.
