Scope and content
Essay on the reason for pessimism in US liberal minds as they are about to win the war. Zuckerkandl describes the liberal mind and its opposite, the military mind. The liberal mind (represented in WW2 by the US and its allies) can only realize its goals of propagating the liberal mind by adopting the military mind, which is the paradox of victory. Also addresses the paradox of defeat—the liberal mind who fights for the side of the military mind will see defeat as a benefit. Compares the current situation with WW1 and the consequences of the liberal mind winning through brute force.
