Prior to 1958, the executive office of St. Michael's College was the Office of the Superior of the Basilian Fathers. In 1958, Rev. Laurence K. Shook became the first President of the University of St. Michael’s College, following the passing of the University of St. Michael's Act on July 1, 1958. This was a separation from the office of the religious head of the Basilian Fathers of the College, the Superior, from the office of the academic head of the University, the President.
