This subseries consists of course material for POL418 Practical Politics. This new experimental course/workshop/seminar was created in response to an expressed student desire to relate political science directly with the real world of party politics. Clarkson was in charge of teaching the course for the first year in 1969-1970. That year, the course was titled POL418 Practical Politics, “Toronto Democracy 1969”. Some records also show the course title as POL418 Workshop in Canadian Politics: The Practical Politics Course: “Toronto Democracy 1969”. Records include lecture notes, course outlines, and some student papers. Also included are memos to students, including one from September 1969 in which Clarkson, a Liberal mayor candidate for the municipal election that year, asserted that his participation in the municipal election campaign did not change the essential nature of the course. Correspondence with students and with individuals involved in the municipal election, as well as a copy of a presentation prepared by Clarkson and titled “Metro Democracy: How Clearly was the Electoral Choice Transmitted” are also included.
