Scope and content
In 1966 foreign policy was identified as the yearly theme to be studied by the University League for Social Reform. Two conferences were held in September 1966 and April 1967 and the examination of foreign policy and nationalism resulted in the publication of the ULSR’s third volume An Independent Foreign Policy for Canada, edited by Stephen Clarkson (McLelland & Stewart, 1968). It has been suggested that this volume was influential in changing the course of Canada’s diplomatic role vis a vis the United States when Trudeau came to power. Contributors included political scientists, economists and historians.
Series consists of records documenting both conferences as well as the Clarkson’s work in editing and publishing the book. Included are drafts of papers both for the conference and the book, correspondence with contributors, notes on foreign policy by theme and comments on papers. There are also records relating to the planning and financial documents with the publisher. Records directly relating to the book have been filed first followed by the supporting documentation relating to the conferences.
