    Administrative history

The Calliopean Association, Fraternitas, Polyhymnia and Philo-Rhetorician were literary societies of male students at Victoria College in Cobourg that were founded to provide practice in extemporaneous speaking. The Calliopean Association was organized in 1844 and continued to 1847. In 1847, Fraternitas was formed and existed until 1849. Fraternitas produced a paper called the Angler (their predecessors produced the Literary Gem). From 1849 until the spring of 1850, the Polyhymnia was organized and finally the Philo-Rhetorician from 1850 until 1852.
