History
The Association was constituted in 1857. Its mandate was to promote the cultivation of literature, science, and oratory. The founder and first president was John Campbell, a tutor in Classics at the College. Samuel Sobieski Nelles took over the presidency after Campbell's retirement in 1860. The Association began hosting 'conversaziones' in 1862 and this became a custom for more than 50 years. In 1893, the Association joined with the Jackson Society to form the Union Literary Society.
