History
Ho Sing-Wah was one of the pioneers and well-known figures in Toronto’s Cantonese Opera development. He was born in Guangzhou, China and started practicing Cantonese Opera since 16 years old, following his father’s steps in order to help with family livelihood. He came to Canada in 1939 on a 2-year tour with the Jin Wah Sing Opera troupe and was detained in Vancouver, BC in 1941 due to the WWII outbreak. He moved to Montreal, QC for a short while and eventually settled in Toronto, ON in 1949. He joined the local Jin Hung Sing Music Club and co-founded several amateur clubs of Chinese music or Cantonese Opera, including Xiao shao Music Club 簫韶音樂社, Ge sheng Music Club 歌聲音樂社, Nan hua Music Club 南華音樂社 (all were founded in 1950s and lasted for a very short time) and Yet Hoy Cantonese Music Club in 1964. His roles in these music clubs were mostly in the music department as conductor or principal percussionist, while acting on stage occasionally. In 1979, he was appointed the chairman of Jin Hung Sing. He remained active and enthusiastic in preserving and promoting Cantonese Opera in Toronto for over 3 decades; many local amateurs benefited from his coaching and legacy.
