Michael Colgrass note on original envelope: "Original pencil manuscript in composer's hand. The pages are not numbered, nor are the bars. Most of the piece was written in pieces, then transferred over to a neat blue pencil copy, over which I 'inked' the blue pencil. This was my typical method of working. Therefore the only neat copy would be the final copy, with no 'fair copy' having been made. This was my way of avoiding one step in the copying process. Also included are my very first notes on my notation of metrical modulation, using [triangle-, square-, ex-shape] type note heads to show 3/3, 5/5, 7/7, and 9/9 meter."
