      History

      Emmy Heim was born in Vienna, Austria on September 10, 1885 and died in Toronto, Ontario on October 13, 1954.

      Initially taught by her mother, she went on to study voice with Frances Mütter in Vienna. She made her debut performance in Vienna in 1911, and went on to tour Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Poland. Heim frequently performed the songs of Schubert, Schumann, and Wolf, as well as contemporary works by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, and Igor Stravinsky.

      By 1930, she had moved to England, and between 1934 and 1939, she spent time in Canada, giving lecture-recitals and teaching at the Toronto Conservatory of Music (TCM). She permanently moved to Canada in 1946 and taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto (RCMT) until her death. Her students included Eileen Law and Lois Marshall.
