Karl Franz Rankl (1898-1968) studied with Arnold Schönberg and Anton Webern (1918-1921) and was a close friend of Hanns Eisler. It is likely during this time that they encountered Emmy Heim, who performed in Schönberg's Verein für Privataufführungen. Rankl emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1939 and was interned on the Isle of Mann in 1940. The three Rankl manuscripts given to Emmy Heim were likely written during their time in England. Emmy Heim and Karl Rankl, piano, performed together in a concert on February 21, 1942 at the Town Hall, Oxford.
