Ingells first met Nouwen in 1985 through the Boston College course he taught. She remembers that he had just left Harvard and seemed totally “worn out,” a “wreck.” Yet, although the class was 250 people it really didn’t seem impersonal at all.
She met Nouwen again a little later on through Parker Palmer, a friend of hers. They were all together at a Benedictine convent in Madison Wisconsin, and sat down for a meal together.
