File consists of five pages of photocopied and annotated lecture notes. There are two pages of lecture notes titled "Light and Darkness" that appear to be from Nouwen's earlier courses at Harvard (this handout is labeled "Handout #9"). The second lecture note is a single double-sided sheet which was formerly titled "Light and Darkness" but has been crossed out and annotated as "Opposing the Word (Light and Word)" in Nouwen's hand. As well, "Handout #9" has been crossed out. Liquid paper has also been used on this sheet. The final lecture notes appear to be the final product of Nouwen's annotations: they are two pages of double sided lecture notes titled "Opposing the Word: (Light and Darkness)" and do not contain a number.
This file appears to illustrate the editorial efforts of Nouwen to adjust and adapt his earlier lecture notes for the summer course at Boston College.

Note
Introduction to the Spiritual Life was an intensive lecture course offered between July 8 and 19, 1985 at Boston College, following Nouwen's resignation from Harvard. The course was held Monday to Friday, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The material of the course was drawn almost verbatim from the lecture courses offered by Nouwen in 1984 and 1985, with the typed lecture summary notes only being slightly modified. Nouwen's teaching assistants for this course were Jeff and Ann Dixon Coppage, David LeBlanc, Priscilla Pano, Ruby Hugh, Barbara Ernst, and Peter Weiskel.
