Biographical history

Geoffrey Payzant, philosopher, writer, and organist, was born in Halifax, NS, 7 Mar 1926, and died in Toronto 31 Aug 2004. His later research interests were the writings of the pioneer of musical aesthetics, Eduard Hanslick (1824-1904), resulting in two books, several articles and dozens of invited lectures.

Acquired by the Music Library from Geoffrey Payzant's estate in 2005.

Scope and content

Collection includes correspondence, notes, typescripts, translations, photocopies of journal articles, and other working papers about Eduard Hanslick. Hanslick was the focus of Payzant's later research, which resulted in two books (published 1986 and 1991), several articles, and various lectures. The fonds consists of the research used in these writings, as well as a typescript manuscript of Payzant's translation of On the musically beautiful: a contribution towards the revision of the aesthetics of music (1986), and copies of his lectures, also titled "On the musically beautiful." The correspondence includes copies of letters between Hanslick and Robert Zimmermann (1824-1898), as well as correspondence between Payzant and other scholars about Hanslick, and correspondence between Payzant and Dietmar Strauß.

Research files, starting with "Ambros, August Wilhelm" (OTUFM 32-12) and ending with Zimmerman (OTUFM 32-138), are listed alphabetically by the last name of the author of material used in Payzant's research. Titles of files were transcribed from Payzant's original folders. His original filing system has been maintained.

Books and music from Professor Payzant’s collection were added to the University of Toronto Library. His materials pertaining to Glenn Gould are held by Library and Archives Canada. The Geoffrey Payzant fonds, including correspondence with Michael Polanyi and paper regarding the Polyani Papers Project and the Polanyi Society are held at the University of Toronto Archives.
