Scope and content

Series consists of correspondence, research notes, and draft articles and lectures by Carl Morey, predominantly on topics relating to music in Toronto for his project "Research on the development of musical life in Toronto"; his contributions to Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians (and the later edition The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians); and articles written for the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada.

Morey received funding from The Canada Council for his multi-year project "Research on the development of musical life in Toronto". As described in his initial application for a Canada Council Research Grant (letter, dated January 24, 1967), the research project covered the "development of musical life in Toronto from the founding of York up to the period of the 1920s. The project will deal with all phases of music, including performances by visitors and residents, composition and education. The results of the study should be significant in developing a History of Music not only in Canada but in North America."

Series also includes materials relating to various other papers, articles, and lectures on Toronto musical life.
