History
Richard Story is a writer, director, producer, cinematographer and educator of Coast Salish and Kanaka-Hawaiian descent, based in Toronto. He has been shooting & directing since 1980, focusing mainly on script-based drama. Richard is very involved in the Canadian Aboriginal media community.
He has written and directed over seventy short films and two feature-length movies, Some Letters to a Young Poet and Echo Lake. His work has screened at film festivals around the world and aired on TMN, Superchannel and Vision TV. He has served as artistic director for the imagineNATIVE Film & Media Arts Festival, as well as programmer for the environmental film festival Planet in Focus. Richard is the author of the book The Portable Film School and founder and president of the Society of Independent Digital Moviemakers.
Richard has lectured in the US, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and across Canada, and has taught digital filmmaking courses at OCAD Ontario College of Art & Design and George Brown College, as well as on Reservations across Canada. Richard Story is currently the professor of Digital Cinematography at Canadore College in Northern Ontario. In addition to teaching, Story has worked on numerous film and personal digital archive donations for clients in Canada and the US.
