History
The Folk Music Ensemble started at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in 1986 as a performance class taught by Timothy F. Rice dedicated to the performance of ensemble genres of European and North American choral and instrumental music. Its directors included Timothy F. Rice (1986-1987), Louise Wrazen (1987-1988), and Louise Hall (1988-1991). The "Ensemble" consisted of a number of smaller ensembles led by undergraduate students and community-based artists with expertise in various traditions.
Under James Kippen, the "Folk Music Ensemble" became the "World Music Ensembles"; as of 2024, they are known as the "Global Music Ensembles."
