Administrative history
The Society was constituted in 1893 after the Jackson Literary Society and the Literary Association joined together. Its object was the cultivation of literature, science, and oratory. In 1924, it was superseded by the Students Parliament.

Fonds consists of constitution, 1893; minutes, 1893-1911, (including rough, 1893-1900), 1896, 1911-1919, 1919-1922; correspondence, 1907, 1922; song books; and correspondence file concerning repayment of a loan made by the Board of Regents to the Union Literary Society for the purchase of Indian relics, 1903-1913.
