Content and structure area

Scope and content

Series consists of orchestral parts for silent film music, stamped "H. L. VANSICKLE VIOLINIST," likely used during Vansickle's time as director of the "Capitolians" Orchestra at the Temple Theatre in Brantford, Ontario (appointed in 1925). The Capitolians also regular performed on the radio (Brantford, CFGC 297).

Other ownership stamps include that of E. Moule and Ernest R. Storey, piano. "E. Moule" is likely Ernest Moule, who moved to Brantford from London, Ontario in December 1908 where he opened and managed a number of theatres, including the Temple Theatre, which opened in December 1919.

System of arrangement

Files of incidental orchestral arrangements are identified with a five-digit alphanumeric code derived from publication and series information, e.g., "BIS01" refers to the first piece in Berg's Incidental Series, published by S. M. Berg. Other pieces are identified using a system evident on the outside of the original folders, e.g., "SC" refers to small concert pieces, or concert pieces for orchestra printed in a small format; "LC" refers to large concert pieces, or concert pieces for orchestra printed in a large format; and "ODD" refers to miscellaneous numbers. It is unknown whether this cataloguing system was devised by H. L. Vansickle or imposed at a later date prior to the transfer of this material to the University of Toronto Music Library.
