Biographical history

Born January 18, 1979 in Brantford, Ontario, H. L. (Harold Linscott) Vansickle was playing violin with theatre orchestras by the age of 15, first at the Grand Opera House theatre in Toronto and later at The Rex theatre. He was appointed director of the "Capitolians" Orchestra at Brantford's Temple Theatre in 1925. Vansickle also performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1922-1925) and directed the Brantford Symphony Orchestra (late 1940s-1951). He passed away in Brantford on March 20, 1979.

Ralph Harrison was born in 1904 in London, Ontario and worked as a musician in London and Toronto until at least 1940. Starting in 1945, his occupation is listed as "manufacturer" on voter lists. He married Ruby Mae Goddard in 1932. Ralph spent most of his adult life in Toronto, where he passed away in 1987.

Biographical history

Douglas Fetherston was a violinist, born in London, Ontario. At age 16, he travelled across Canada to Vancouver, playing in concerts and recitals along the way. In Vancouver, he studied with Holroyd Paull. After his marriage to Katherine McHugh in 1915, he returned to London, where he became the musical director at both the Patricia Theatre and Loew's Theatre (later renamed the Century Theatre). He also performed in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for over thirty years, from 1931 to 1962.

Biographical history

F. W. (Frederick William, or Fred) Timms was an organist, conductor, and choir director in Niagara Falls, Ontario and the surrounding area. During his career, he was the director of various choirs and orchestras including the Vinemount Choral Society, F. W. Timms Concert Orchestra, Beamsville Philharmonic Choir (1932 - ca. 1941), [Beamsville] centennial choir (1966), and Lundy's Lane United Church in Niagara Falls. He was also one of the founders of the Lincoln County Music Festival and the first chairman of the Niagara Falls chapter of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) (inaugurated in 1945).

Archival history

Based on contents of boxes and accompanying documentation, the collection appears to consist of at least three distinct donations: (1) transferred from the Ontario Science Centre titled the "Van Sickle Collection" (August 1980); (2) donated to the TIFF Film Reference Library in September 1996 by John Harrison; and (3) a collection of primarily piano or organ parts and thematic cue sheets for films from F. W. Timms, donated to the TIFF Film Reference Library in March 1981.

All materials transferred to the University of Toronto Music Library from the Film Reference Library of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) (2024).

Collection of incidental silent film music, including thematic cue sheets and photoplay albums for performance by a theatre orchestra or solo keyboard player (piano or organ). Ownership stamps are indicative of use at a variety of theatres in Ontario, including in London, Brantford, and Sarnia.
