Scope and content
File contains sketches, score, and parts for Beckwith's documentary cantata for soprano/narrator, fife/flute/recorder, clarinet/recorder, guitar/mandolin, and harpsichord. The cantata is based on accounts of the trans-Atlantic voyage of the Hector (July 10 to September 15, 1773), which carried about 180 immigrants predominantly from Ross-shire and Inverness-shire, who formed the first major settlement of Scots in Canada in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The music incorporates traditional songs and instrumental pieces. Text compiled by the composer. Commissioned by Musick Fyne, Toronto.
