History
Since the opening of the first Erindale College Library, the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Library has acquired records and artifacts dating from the establishment of the campus in 1967 to the present day. In 2006, the Library moved into the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre and established the UTM Archive on the fourth floor to hold the archives and special collections in support of curricula and research on campus. In 2021, an Archives & Special Collections Reading Room on the main floor of the library was established.
Geographical and cultural context
Mandates/Sources of authority
The mandate of the University of Toronto Mississauga Library, Archives & Special Collections unit is to acquire, preserve, arrange, describe, and provide access to rare and unique material that supports curricula and research at the University of Toronto Mississauga. It works cooperatively with the University of Toronto Archives & Records Management Services (UTARMS) to preserve and provide access to material that documents the history of the University of Toronto Mississauga campus and community.
Administrative structure
Records management and collecting policies
To support the Archives & Special Collections’ mandate, the unit acquires material in the following categories:
- UTM Community Records
- UTM Faculty, Librarian, and Staff Records
- UTM Campus Publications
- Special Collections in the areas of Erindale history, game studies, Latin American & Caribbean studies, and South Asian civilizations
Donations
Donations will be accepted in accordance with the terms negotiated with the Coordinator and documented in a donor agreement. Materials donated to UTM Library, Archives & Special Collection become the property of the Library.
Donations will be considered for inclusion based on the following factors:
- Relationship to collection policy, current priorities, and existing holdings
- Teaching and research potential
- Physical condition of the records
- Resources required to make the material available to researchers
- Terms of restriction, legal rights, and/or other requests from donors
Purchases
Purchasing of material will be considered when it proves impossible to acquire the material by other methods of donation
Deaccessions
All deaccessions are recommended by the Coordinator and approved by the Chief Librarian, UTM Library. Deaccessioning of material may be conducted for the following reasons:
- Records duplicate what is already in the Library’s holdings
- Records are outside the UTM Library, Archives & Special Collections mandate and scope
- Materials are hazardous to the holdings
- Records are damaged either through natural decay or through accidental damage
- UTM Library can no longer care for the records in a way that preserves and ensures their long-term viability

On-site consultation:
Librarians or staff from the Digital Scholarship Unit are available to discuss your research and help you locate and make suggestions on sources. It is good to know as much about your topic from secondary sources before coming to the Archives & Special Collections. If you have references such as footnoted sources, be sure to bring them along to help in your search.
If you cannot visit us in person, we are still happy to assist you with your inquiry. While we can undertake limited research for specific information, we encourage you to plan a visit if your inquiry requires lengthy research. There are no fees for the research we do on your behalf.
